New funding announced as part of the province’s Safer Communities Action Plan will help improve capacity and strengthen rural police services.
$230 million will be provided over the next 3 years to ensure adequate and effective levels of policing, particularly in rural, remote, and First Nations communities.
That funding will help fill long-standing vacancies in communities of less than 5,000 people, and allow regional RCMP units to reach their fully authorized staffing levels.
In addition, the funds will allow for the hiring of additional officers for specialized units, such as the Major Crimes, Highway Patrol, and sexual exploitation units.
With the additional officers, standard units will be able to better address other public safety concerns.
Funding will also go towards supporting prosecutors and probation officers dealing with violent, high-risk offenders.
Earlier this week, the province also announced their plan to crack down on repeat offenders.
