School District 52 and the Prince Rupert Port Authority have teamed up to give students a way to learn and experience nature at the same time.
Together, the two helped to bring a new outdoor classroom to Lax Kxeen Secondary School, allowing students and educators to take their lessons outside.
Built next to the school’s accessible playground, the 20 by 20 steel structure features soft rubber flooring, and a skylight to allow natural light.
Proponents and educators say the classroom will improve the mental health of students, while allowing them to engage all their senses, and connect with nature.
In total, roughly $40,000 of the project’s $82,000 price tag was covered by the Authority’s Community Investment Fund.
