Two First Nations communities in the north are receiving provincial funding to stop their organic waste from entering landfills.
The Kwadacha and Heiltsuk Nations are both receiving funding from the Organics Infrastructure Program to expand their organic processing capacity.
Efforts will be made by both nations to compost their organic waste within their community instead of transporting it to a different landfill.
According to the province, composting closer to home will provide job opportunities and produce compost to be used in local food production.
It’s estimated that the two projects will reduce more than 5,600 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions by 2034 through processing almost 500 tonnes of organic waste per year.
Currently, municipal landfills account for 3.5% of the province’s greenhouse gas emissions and contain 40% of organic compostable material.
A compost facility will be a first for the Kwadacha Nation receiving nearly $300,000 for its construction, while the Heiltsuk Council will receive over $300,000 to upgrade their current facility.
