For the second time in as many years, the District of Hudson’s Hope is preparing to transition to a new water source.
Before work to construct a shoreline berm for the Site C Megadam began in 2020, the community had drawn their tap water directly from the Peace River.
In order to keep the supply safe from contamination, BC Hydro invested $5 million in the construction of a new ground water treatment plant.
But, since its completion, the plant has been plagued with issues, including two-months of do not consume and boil water advisories this Fall.
With the berm now completed, and the new plant still facing considerable challenges, the District has decided to switch back to the River.
Phase one of the 3 phase transition project is expected to begin this month, with McElhanney and Clear Blue Water contracted to perform the work.
BC Hydro says they are willing to provide up to $2 million for the transition, if they receive proof the river supply will be safer and more reliable.
