One project in Northwest BC is among 4 Indigenous-led conservation projects splitting a fresh $800 million in federal funds over the next 7 years.
Each of the projects will be funded under the innovative Project Finance for Permanence model, developed in the Great Bear Rainforest in 2007.
That model ensures the availability of full, permanent, and flexible funding for community-led conservation projects, while ensuring collaboration with First Nations.
Led by 17 First Nations along the North Pacific Coast, the Great Bear Sea Initiative looks to capitalize on the model’s successes in the region.
With the federal funding, the Initiative aims to develop a new collaborative PFP for the region by 2025.
Under that model, they will work with Canada and their philanthropic partners to further protect the unique landscapes and habitats of the Northcoast.
