A newly completed passive house in Witset is bringing 26 units of much needed affordable housing to the community.
Constructed by the Witset First Nation and Lu’ma Development, the high-efficiency housing project was funded by BC Housing.
Located at 840 Seaton View Drive, the facility holds 16 studio apartments and 10 two-bedroom units, with three of those being fully accessible.
Operated by the Yikh Lhiw Dinle Housing Society, the development also features a number of unique, locally-inspired, design choices.
A covered outdoor lounge and firepit is attached and decorated with local art, as is the entranceway, which is itself crafted from log timbers.
Indoor decorations and furnishings are also inspired by the work of local Wet’suwet’en artist James Madam.
During the construction of the facility, 40 local residents received training in the concepts of passive house construction.
Passive houses use numerous features to reduce heating and energy costs, and to meet the highest standards of energy efficiency.
