Atlin residents may be without mail service for much of the holiday season, after their only postmaster was forced to tender her resignation.
For the past 6 years, the town’s only post office had been operated out of the Atlin General Store, by owner Tina St Cyr.
But, when the store was destroyed by fire in September, St Cyr was forced to find a new home for the post office.
She was eventually able to secure the site of a former morgue as a temporary host, but says the new location is much more costly to operate.
Despite this, she says Canada Post has refused to renegotiate her $500 per month contract, which no longer covers the expenses to operate the facility.
With Canada Post unwilling to budge, St Cyr says she has been left with no choice but to resign as postmaster, effective December 23rd.
Canada Post says they are working on solutions to keep the post office in operation until a replacement can be hired.
