Welcome to Journeys with Kelly Kenny. Tonights guest is Bruce Miller. Bruce Miller is Anishinabe and is a member of Matachewan First Nation In Ontario. Bruce is here to share his directorial debut short film, Conviction. Conviction has been shown at a few film festivals but just recently at the Whistler Film Festival on November 30 – Dec 4 2022. We discuss some staggering statistics Indigenous males make up 32% of the Canadian Prison Population and Indigenous females make up 50% of Canadian Prison Population; to give some context Indigenous people only make up 5% of the Canadian Populations !! Yep you heard that right, it is heartbreaking as we know why this is happening and it is so difficult to make change but … its voices like Bruce’s that can help change this narrative. Bruce stated when he attempted to establish a career in the arts 20 years ago but there just wasn’t enough support for aspiring indigenous artists. Bruce found an occupation in Calgary and he kept this job for 15 years then decided he wanted to give filmmaking another chance. Given his background in front line work it is this work that inspired Bruce to show the other side, the personal side. Bruce is a kind inviting gentleman and I know we will hear and see more from Bruce given his talent as a director.
