The first round of provincial rent supplement for youth from government care begins this month.
797 young adults who were previously in government care will be receiving $600 per-month rent contributions.
44 percent of those young adults identified as indigenous, demonstrating an over-representation of indigenous youth in government care.
Mitzi Dean, minister of Children and Family Development says that youth and young adults transitioning from government care are at significantly higher risk of homelessness.
Along with rent supplements, new Youth Transition Workers will help youths from 14 to 25 access services and provide guidance through a transition from government care.
More assistance is also offered to people transitioning from care through the Agreements with Young Adults program.
In August that program announced that employment income will now be exempt when considering the amount of funding that a young adult will receive through the program.
A second intake for the rent supplement program will begin in spring 2023 with more funding for skills training, dental, and medical care also being planned.
