BC will not be issuing an Environmental Assessment Certificate for a coal mining and processing operation planned for the Peace Region.
Proposed by Glencore, the Sukunka Coal Mine would have been located roughly 40 kms west of Tumbler Ridge.
But, an environmental assessment conducted by the province revealed that the project would have significant adverse impacts on local wildlife.
Mitigation measures put forward by Glencore were deemed to be unlikely to offset the negative impacts on the red-listed Qunitette caribou herd, and local grizzly populations.
It was also determined that the project would discharge unacceptable amounts of mercury and other chemical into nearby waters.
Federal approval for the project was also denied, as a result of a substitution agreement, allowing the province to conduct the assessment on their behalf.
