North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice has penned a letter to the Federal government requesting funding to improve Prince Rupert’s water distribution infrastructure.
Provincial investments over the past few years have provided funds for a source water dam replacement, new delivery lines from the mainland, and a new water filtration system.
But, the City’s current water distribution infrastructure is more than 100 years old, and in need of a complete replacement.
With the Port of Prince Rupert conducting $60 billion in global trade annually, Rice is hoping Ottawa will help front the bill for the replacement.
Her letter supports a City request to expand the Northern Trade Corridor Fund to cover infrastructure upgrades for communities impacted by port development.
It also supports their suggestion to re-activate the Fund’s Arctic and Northern Communities Stream, and add Prince Rupert to the eligiblity list.
Rice says a failure in the water system would likley shut down port operations, jeopardizing federal investments and the Port’s reputation.
