Following a water pipe break and flood on December 23, Kermode Friendship stepped up to assist the tenants of Coachman Apartments.
Kermode reached out to Mayor Bujtas to see if anything could be done about the flooded and freezing condition of the building.
As the landlord had passed away earlier in December, the Ministry of Housing had to grant permission to Kermode to access the manager’s office for keys.
The keys were used to access abandoned apartments to close windows and turn off the water which had overflowed sinks.
Between the 23rd and 26th, firefighters returned to the complex multiple times to respond to alarms before shutting off the water which had impacted the fire system.
Tenants were then made aware of the situation, as the impacted fire system posed a safety concern.
Emergency Support Services have been activated and have extended funding to provide hotel rooms until Jan. 19 for any residents who chose to evacuate.
ESS headquarters is currently stationed at Kermode with security and fire watch also being funded to monitor the apartments.
Currently, there are no long-term plans in place for the building or the tenants.
