British Columbia has changed it’s recycling system to include a wider selection of single use plastics and takes effect immediately.
Single use plastics like sandwhich bags, party cups, bowls and plates are some of the most common found trash on B.C. shores.
Including single use plastics in the recycling system is an attempt to make sure that exemptions to the federal ban on single use plastics are still able to be recycled.
Residential blue bins can now accept plastic utensils and serveware, hangers, paper plates and bowls that have plastic lining, and aluminum.
Flexible plastics may only be returned at depots like sandwich bags, shrink wrap, bubble wrap, shopping and recycling bags.
Currently B.C. regulates the largest number of residential packaging and products for recycle in Canada due to their producer responsibility program, which works to hold companies and manufacturers accountable for their products being recycled.
