Williams Lake First Nation Chief Willie Sellars is set to be nominated for a 2023 BC Reconciliation Award, following a vote by City Council.
Councillors voted unanimously in favour of Mayor Surinderpal Rathor’s motion to nominate Sellars for the award last night.
Established in 2021, the Award recognizes those who demonstrate exceptional leadership, respect, and commitment to advancing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.
Last year, Sellars led the Nation through the first phase of their geophysical investigation at the site of the former St Joseph’s Mission Residential School.
Preliminary results from that phase revealed 93 reflections of possible human remains over just 14 of 480 hectares of land being probed.
He also led numerous ceremonies to honour the Nation’s culture and history, and signed multiple agreements to improve relations with the City.
Sellars has also played a key role in advancing the Osprey’s Nest and Sugar Can Cannabis developments, and agreements with local industry.
This year’s nomination period is open until January 20th, with winners being announced in the Spring.
