Wet’suwt’en officials are calling for the DFO to issue a stop work order, following a flyover of a Coastal GasLink worksite.
Nation officials say CGL has failed to control silt or erosion into the Clore River, a large spawning habitat for Skeena salmon and steelhead.
According to Chief Tsebesa, who was part of the monitoring flight, contractors dug up gravel beds and drove heavy machines across the spawning habitat to divert the river.
Tsayu Clan Chief Na’moks, says that an immediate stop work order is needed to protect the salmon habitat and eggs downstream and prevent further violation of Indigenous rights.
BC’s Environmental assesment office has issued more than 50 warnings, 16 orders, and 2 fines against CGL for repeated erosion and sediment control violations.
In response, CGL says that they are working with regulators to address the issues, and are committed to achieving the highest standards of environmental protection.
Chief Tsebesa says the Nation has been prevented from monitoring the work, but CGL says they have a safe access process in place, which has been communicated with the Nation.
