Avalanche danger ratings along the northwest coast have been set to high, following recent wet storms and high winds.
Warming conditions experienced over the past couple of weeks have combined with recent snowfall to further destabilize a weakened snowpack.
That has prompted Avalanche Canada to raise the danger rating from the coastline all the way through Terrace, Kitimat, and Laxgalts’ap to Stage 4.
Stage 4 is the second highest risk level, indicating a high likelihood of natural and human-caused avalanches, which may be quite large in some areas.
Risks across the rest of the Stikine and the Bulkley Valley are sitting at stage 3, or considerable risk.
Residents are advised to avoid travel in the backcountry and any areas with steep slopes or mountains.
