Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach has joined the list of government officials calling for Federal aid to solve Prince Rupert’s water woes.
In a letter sent to Infrastructure Minister Dominic LeBlanc, Bachrach urged Ottawa to provide funding to replace the City’s aging water distribution infrastructure.
It echoes a number of points made previously in a similar request sent by North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice last month.
Her letter pre-empted another sent by other provincial officials, during a Local State of Emergency declared by the City following a number of water main breaks.
Both letters note that a water system failure would shut down operations at the Port of Prince Rupert, costing Canada billions in global trade.
They also make reference to the challenges the City has faced in maintaining their infrastructure, while the port has seen massive growth.
Both the City and Province have already invested in solving the problem, but Bachrach says the scale of the challenges faced require federal funds.
