Joint funding from all three levels of government will help bring a new composting facility to Kitimat.
An investment of at least $910,000 through the Organics Infrastructure Program will support the development of the new facility.
Once completed, it will be capable of processing 1,500 tonnes of organic waste each year, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 2,000 tonnes.
Currently, organic waste represents 40 percent of materials sent to municipal landfills, generating significant greenhouse gas emissions.
Up to two thirds of the final project costs will be covered by the Federal and Provincial Governments, with the District providing the rest.
