Representatives from the National Urban Rural and Northern Indigenous Housing Strategy Coalition are calling on Ottawa to fund that strategy.
They are urging the Federal government to fulfill their commitments to do so by earmarking $6 billion in the 2023 budget for its development.
Any such strategy would need to be Indigenous-led, and would advocate for holistic, service-based community housing which empowers Indigenous communities.
It would also include funding for culturally relevant community resources, health services, and education to break the cycle of housing insecurity.
They are also calling for the creation of Canada’s first National Indigenous Housing Centre.
Last month, the coalition helped to create an organization to advocate for Indigenous housing needs, known as National Indigenous Collaborative Housing Inc.
