One of the journalists arrested while covering an injunction enforcement on the Coastal GasLink pipeline route is suing the RCMP.
In November of 2021, members of the Gidimt’en clan issued an eviction notice to CGL workers, in an effort to prevent drilling under the Wedzin Kwa.
That was followed by two-days of enforcement efforts by police, who had arrested 30 individuals by the time all was said and done.
Among those arrested were journalists Michael Toledano and Amber Bracken, who was on assignment for The Narwhal at the time.
All charges against the pair would later be dropped, and police would admit that they had properly identified themselves as journalists.
Now Bracken and The Narwhal are suing the RCMP for wrongful arrest and detention, and for violating Bracken’s protected Charter Rights as a journalist.
