First Nations leaders in BC are calling for an Indigenous-led investigation into allegations of sexual abuse by RCMP in Prince George.
Those calls come after information from an unreleased report by the Civilian Review and Complaints Commission was made public last week.
According to the report, RCMP failed to investigate multiple allegations of abuse against Indigenous girls originally made in 2011.
But the allegations ultimately stem from 2006, when former Constable Lisa Mackenzie uncovered video evidence of officers assaulting Indigenous girls.
Mackenzie says she informed senior officers of her findings, but that the tapes were stolen during a break-in days later.
She voiced concerns that the tapes could be linked to the case of ex-judge David Ramsay.
Ramsay is serving 7 years for preying on Indigenous girls as young as 12, in a case that also saw 9 officers accused, but not charged.
Fellow ex-officer Garry Kerr was also made aware of the tapes, and reported them and the break-in to the Commission in 2011.
Now, the First Nations Leadership Council is calling for an Indigenous, civilian-led, investigation, and pending criminal charges.
They are also calling for a complete overhaul of policing, with a focus on First Nations justice initiatives.
