An apparent lack of commitment from the province has the First Nations LNG Alliance concerned over the future of liquid natural gas in BC.
In an open letter addressed to Premier David Eby, the Alliance notes a failure to mention LNG development in this month’s throne speech.
But, their concerns also stem from lengthy delays in regulatory decision making amid calls to cease traditional energy development in general.
According to the Alliance, such views are irresponsible, unrealistic, and ill-informed.
They say that First Nations support for LNG development was only granted following extensive internal and intergovernmental consultations.
Since granting their approval, the Alliance says LNG development has helped lift thousands of Indigenous people out of intergenerational poverty.
Their letter states that a withdrawal from the industry would be a failure to support economic reconciliation, as well as an environmental policy failure.
If BC does default on their obligations, the Alliance says it will not stop them from advancing and enforcing their interests.

Last week, the Alliance announced an agreement which would see them lead LNG development going forward.
