Prince Rupert’s aging municipal infrastructure has become a hot button topic of late for politicians from all levels of government.
Calls to replace the failing infrastructure picked up speed in December, after a series of water main ruptures prompted a local state of emergency.
But while replacing the century-old pipes is a top priority, it represents just a fraction of the total replacement costs facing the city.
Estimates pin the total cost to right the city’s infrastructure woes at over $600 million.
Water and wastewater infrastructure account for 23 and 34 percent of that estimate, respectively, while roads account for 30 percent, and community assets the remainder.
An Infrastructure Replacement Strategy, which will advise spending over the next 5 years, is currently being developed.
Once completed, it will be shared alongside other updates through a new online portal created by the City to increase transparency.
