MLA Melanie Mark shocked the province when she announced her resignation in legislature last week.
But what didn’t shock everyone was the incidents of harassment and racism that Mark pointed to during her speech.
Mark became the first First Nations woman ever to serve in BC’s legislature when she was elected as Vancouver-Mount Pleasant MLA in 2016.
Now, the Union of BC Indian Chiefs are calling on BC to investigate and address the conditions faced by Mark over her 7 years.
They echo her sentiment that the colonial institution is resistant to change, and say that her experience cannot be the benchmark moving forward.
A blanketing and brushing off ceremony was held for Mark by the Union to bring her strength and protection, following her announcement last week.
