Costs to close phase 2 of the City of Terrace Landfill have increased by $2.1 million.
Constructed in two phases, the second portion of the landfill was in operation from the 1980’s to 2016.
In a city council meeting on Feb. 27, council was asked to split the increased budget between two funding streams.
$1 million will be taken from the Gaming Reserve with the rest coming from the General Capital Reserve.
Newly added funds will contribute to continued water treatment and monitoring, construction of a final impermeable cover, a gas venting system, and a surface water management system.
In total, phase 2 of the municipal landfill closure is estimated to cost $4.8 million.
