Ottawa has introduced a new Collaborative Modern Treaty Implementation Policy, co-developed alongside their First Nations, Métis, and Inuit partners.
Work to craft a new policy began last February, following calls from the Land Claims Agreement Coalition to improve the implementation process.
Under the policy, federal officials will be required to follow a new distinctions-based process, which reflects the unique circumstances of each treaty partner.
It establishes a new Intergovernmental Leaders Forum, where both parties can come together to work on advancing shared priorities.
Modern Treaty members will also have more input on legislative, policy, and program initiatives through a new Intergovernmental Policy Circle.
Over the next six months, treaty partners will work with ministry officials to co-develop recommendations for an independent oversight and accountability mechanism.
