A consultation draft for proposed First Nations drinking water and wastewater legislation has been revealed by the Federal Government.
Since last summer, Federal officials have met with more than 80 First Nations and organizations to advise the priorities of the legislation.
As proposed, the legislation would affirm that First Nations’ rights to self government include jurisdiction over drinking and wastewater.
It aims to ensure that First Nations have reliable access to safe water supplies, and requires Ottawa to facilitate efforts to close service gaps.
Those interested in sharing their thoughts on the proposal have until March 19th to do so, through an online engagement portal.
You can read the complete draft at this link, and follow this one to the online engagement portal.
The deadline to apply for compensation (via this link) through the First Nations Drinking Water Settlement has also been extended to March 7th of 2024.
