A 10 day visit to Canada by the UN Rapporteur on the rights of Indigenous Peoples, Francisco Cali Tzay, has now wrapped up.
During his visit, Cali Tzay met with Indigenous leaders, activists, and organizations from across Canada to discuss their concerns.
While he acknowledges the progress made by Canada to promote and protect Indigenous rights in recent years, he says there is still much to do.
Hearing the stories of residential school survivors left Cali Tzay feeling saddened and dismayed, and left him calling for action.
He says Canada must immediately address the adverse impact of colonial legacies to achieve meaningful reconciliation and accountability.
To that end, he is calling for Canada to implement all of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, and the recommendations from the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
Cali Tzay also denounced the use of force while policing resource projects, and a failure to obtain First Nations consent before allowing them.
