Efforts are underway to contain a mysterious oil sheen which appeared on the Kitimat River yesterday.
District officials first received reports of the contamination at around noon, and began investigating immediately.
They were able to determine that the sheen posed no threat to water quality, and tracked the source to a storm drain in the Service Centre.
It is unclear at this time exactly where the contaminated material came from, nor how it entered the drain system.
While the District continues to investigate the cause, they are encouraging residents and businesses to make sure polluting materials stay out of the storm drain system.
Booms have been set up in the river to contain the contaminant, and mitigation measures are being followed to remove the oil.
