A petition calling for limitations on the foreign ownership of commercial fishing licenses on the west coast hits Ottawa this week.
Canada does not currently restrict the foreign ownership of commercial licenses and quotas, nor do they track citizenship when they change hands.
But the United Fisherman and Allied Workers’ Union says this displaces Canadian-owned operations, and causes widespread job loss.
They say foreign ownership compromises domestic food security, and damages the economic viability of Canadian operations.
On February 22nd, the Union launched a petition calling for a ban on the further transfer of licenses and quotas to foreign owners.
