The Metis Nation of B.C. has launched a judicial review against the Minister of Indigenous Services.
Bill C-92 was enacted in 2020, giving First Nations, Inuit, and Metis nations jurisdiction over their child and family services.
Though according to the Metis nation, that right was denied by the government due to not being deemed an Indigenous governing body.
The MNBC says that their funding request for capacity building to take back control of child and family services was also denied.
Representing 23,000 registered metis citizens, MNBC says that Canada’s position is a slap in the face and perpetuates the harms of residential school system by keeping Metis children part of a colonial welfare system.
