A rally against the demolition of the Seven Sisters Mental Health Facility on Saturday saw community engagement but no results.
With it’s replacement currently in construction, 44 community members gathered on April 1st to prevent the demolition of the 18 year old building.
Attendees were lobbying to have the building stay up to possibly serve community needs like housing or addiction services.
It was there that president of the society Diane Penner told CFNR about a response letter from Health Minister Adrian Dix concerning the fate of the building.
In his letter Dix said that relocating or retaining the building would pose significant cost risks associated with changing the contract plans, and adapting the building for another use.
Because of that, keeping the building up is not feasible according to Dix, though he stated the Ministry is committed to ensuring seniors receive dignified and quality health care.
The new facility will contain 5 more beds than the current 20, contributing to a total of 107 beds across the two buildings.
