A question of tugboat safety has been raised ahead of the National Day of Mourning.
Two years after the fatal tugboat Ingenika sinking, the Transportation Safety Board finally made 4 recommendations to protect mariners
Those recommendations aim to regulate tugs 15 tonnes or less by beginning to require regular inspection to ensure regulatory compliance, require owners to assess risks, have the Pacific Pilotage Authority verify that the tugs meet safety requirements before issuing pilotage waivers, and the creation of a process to verify ongoing compliance.
However, after over a month, there has been no move to implement those changes, which Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach is calling to change.
With the National Day of Mourning happening tomorrow, Bachrach asked when the minister will commit to implementing the recommendations while mariners lives hang in the balance.
