UPDATE:
Extreme flooding has forced the Village of Gitwangak to postpone the grand opening of their new child care centre, initially planned for today.
So far, a new date for the grand opening has not yet been selected.
Original Story:
Gitwangak community members are being invited to attend the grand opening of the Village’s new child care centre.
Known as Wo’umxhl Simalgyex̱, or Cradle of the Language, the new facility will replace the old centre by the same name.
But clients won’t need to go far to find the new facility, located on Kitwanga Road West, between the old centre and the elementary school.
Operated by the Gitwangak Education Society, the new centre features a modular design, and brings 53 new child care spaces to the community.
Once open, an Elder in residence will visit the site each day to provide knowledge on language and traditional values.
Other amenities include: a new playground, a food garden, and a small smokehouse.
An official grand opening ceremony will be held at the new centre on May 16th, beginning at 2:00 in the afternoon.
That will be followed by a Tour at 3:00, and a feast at the Community Hall set for 4:00.
Funding for the centre was provided by the Province through Child Care BC’s New Spaces Fund.
