Five Indigenous-led food security and agriculture projects are among 15 splitting more than $1 million in fresh Provincial funding.
Just over $78,000 will help the Gitxaala Nation develop a food security system, expand community gardens, and establish a backyard garden and community kitchen.
Haida Wild will get $80,000 to go towards the installation of two smokehouses on Haida Gwaii.
$75,000 goes to the Qqs Projects Society in Bella Bella to implement 25 recommendations proposed in a food security assesment.
Another $80,000 will help expand the Saik’uz Nation’s food production and distribution system at Stoney Creek Reserve 1 near Vanderhoof.
And the Xeni Gwet’in First Nation gets $80,000 to offer workshops and training, and to hire a local Indigenous food lead to help start a local farmers’ market.
