A proposed housing development in Prince Rupert is now a step closer to fruition, though it’s still unclear what kind of housing it will bring.
City Council gave first and second readings to a by-law amendment which would allow the 40-unit development to go ahead last night.
Proposed for the corner of 9th Avenue West and Lisa Walters Drive, the project would be built on lots purchased from the City.
If the amendments are approved, the lots would shift from R1 and P1 zoning to RM5 multi-family residential, allowing for a larger building.
Amendments would also restrict the height of the 5-story building to 21 metres, and require yards to be 2.5 metres away from side property lines.
While the developer says the housing will be market value, it is unclear whether it will be rental or sold housing at this time.
Now, the amendment must go through a public consultation process before it can be granted a third reading, and eventual adoption.
