Today is Wild Salmon Day, and the Province is honouring that by providing over $17 million for salmon recovery and conservation efforts.
Of that, $15 million will be shared between the First Nation Fisheries Council and the Pacific Salmon Foundation.
Together, they will put that funding towards the restoration of Pacific wild salmon populations using both scientific data and Indigenous knowledge.
Meanwhile, the remaining $2.25 million will go solely to the FNFC to go towards increasing capacity to protect salmon in Indigenous communities.
With the funding, the Province hopes the organizations can help to counter rapidly declining populations of wild salmon on the Pacific Coast.
