Updates to the School Space Acommodation Standards policy will work to guide the development of new schools in First Nations communities.
Alleviating enrollment pressures, including First Nations adults in school designs, reflecting cultural needs, and improved space design are now a part of those standards.
All developed in conjunction by Indigenous Services Canada and the Assembly of First Nations, they say the updates will lead to less overcrowding, and culturally specific spaces.
They also say the updates will aid in providing accurate enrolment projections, better acommodation for special needs students, rural community needs and more.
Those standards will apply to new schools and major renovation projects that are currently in the feasibility study phase and are funded by Indigenous Services.
Modernizing this infrastructure policy aligns with Canada’s commitment to honour the 7th and 8th Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which focus on closing education gaps for Indigenous students.
