Those heading to Orange Shirt Day events this September 30th may notice a unique new design, imagined by a local Gitxaala student.
Created by Lach Klan student Leland Aster, the design features a dreamcatcher centred around a hand, with the words Every Child Matters inside.
It was selected from a number of designs submitted by students at the school as part of a contest held by the Altrad Gitxaala Joint Venture.
That came after the Venture was approached by a non-Indigenous promotions company looking to order shirts to sell in honour of Truth and Reconciliation Day.
In the spirit of the day, and looking to avoid any cultural appropriation, the Venture then decided to reach out to the school with the idea for the contest.
