Prince Rupert City Council has given three readings to a zoning amendment in the hopes of bringing much-needed housing to the community.
It seeks to alter the zoning of eight parcels at the corner of 9th Avenue West and Lisa Walters Drive to allow for a proposed housing development.
If passed, the lots would shift from the current R2 and P1 zoning, which allow for duplexes and two-family homes, to RM5 or multi-family residential.
That would allow for a 40-unit housing project proposed by North Star Development to move on to the permitting and planning phase.
But a public hearing held yesterday brought forward opposition both in person, and via a 31-signature petition and 4 additional letters.
Many of their concerns centre around traffic congestion, sight lines, and the current zoning matching the character of the neighbourhood.
While all agreed that more housing is needed, they feel that there are better suited locations within the City.
Council will see the amendment again at an upcoming meeting to vote on final adoption.
