Residents of Tumbler Ridge can begin returning home, after rain and cooler temperatures helped crews fighting the West Kiskatinaw River wildfire.
Evacuation orders were lifted by the District today, though the fire is still listed as out of control, and is covering over 25,000 hectares.
Some properties covered under the former order remain under an alert, while a separate order is in place for properties east of the District.
Another order which had been in place further east at the Alberta border for the Peavine Creek fire has been reduced to an alert as well.
In the North Peace, east of Highway 97 in the Tommy Lakes area, the second largest wildfire in BC’s history is continuing to grow.
Now covering over 506,000 hectares, the Donnie Creek fire’s evacuation orders and alerts remain unchanged.
That’s also true for the Ittsi Creek fire west of Highway 77 at the border with the Northwest Territories, which has grown to 5,500 hectares.
Meanwhile, fire danger ratings are now set to high across the northwest, with some sections in the Nechako at extreme levels.
All open burning and campfires remain banned across the province.
