Cargo volumes at the Port of Prince Rupert dropped for the second year in a row, with 24.6 million tonnes moving through the port in 2022.
That marks a 2 percent drop from the year before, mostly owing to supply chain challenges, shifting global energy needs, and the economy.
But the Authority says that’s just more evidence of the need to diversify the port complex to create a sustainable and reliable gateway.
Work to diversify the port in 2022 included the completion of the Fairview-Ridley Connector Corridor, and the expansion of the Fairview Container Terminal.
That brought capacity at the terminal up to 1.6 million TEUs, with a second expansion planned to take that up to 1.8 million.
Trigon also began work on a second berth to double capacity, and work is underway to assess the feasibility of a new container terminal.
2022 also saw the port reduce sulfur oxide emissions by 93 percent, and avoid 34,000 kilograms in emissions through their shore power system.
