Kitimat residents celebrated the grand opening of the new Haisla Bridge last weekend, but will need to wait a bit longer to begin using it.
After two-years of construction, and over a decade of planning, the new two-lane bridge spanning the Kitimat River is now almost ready for traffic.
A ceremony held on Saturday saw the unveiling of the eight unique aluminum art panels, which span the length of the bridge.
Crafted by artists Nathan Wilson and Paul Windsor, the panels represent the eight current and memorial clans of the Haisla Nation.
There are still some finishing touches, including lighting to illuminate those panels, which must be completed before the bridge opens to the public.
It is expected to open in mid-July, with traffic being split between both the new and old bridge while contractor Ledcor-Haisla finishes the work.
Deconstruction of the original, 69 year-old bridge, will begin once the new one is fully open.
