A project to reduce wildfire risks near Houston has now wrapped up, just in time for the heat of the wildfire season.
Funded by the Forest Enhancement Society of BC, the project covered over 1,200 hectares along the District’s southwest boundary.
It aimed to reduce risks in the areas identified in the community wildfire protection plan from 2018, and establish a defensible fuel-free zone.
Work on the project was led by Pro-Tech Forest Resources, who have guided wildfire reduction activities in the district for nearly two decades.
Project manager Derek Smith planned six large-scale broadcast burns, which were successfully completed with the help of the BC Wildfire Service.
Other collaborations with the District, the Province, local fire crews, and several others also played a key role in completing the project.
It also saw the planting of 380,000 pine and birch seedlings, after new research forced the project away from initial plans to plant deciduous trees.
