Energy demands in BC are set to increase by 15 percent by 2030, and the Province is hoping Indigenous-led energy projects can help fill the void.
A fresh $140 million is being provided through the BC Indigenous Clean Energy Initiative to support Indigenous-led power generation projects.
It comes as BC Hydro gets set to launch their first call for power in 15 years, as the shift from fossil fuels to clean electricity continues.
Through that call, BC Hydro will only acquire 100 percent clean, renewable, electricity through a process designed alongside First Nations.
But that process will be mostly dominated by large industry level projects, with the new funding intended to help smaller-scale projects compete.
BC Hydro expects to launch the call next Spring in the hopes of acquiring new energy sources as early as 2028.
