Ottawa has released its plan to implement the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
While some priorities may be shared among First Nations, Inuit and Metis people, the government has created a distinctions based approach to the action plan.
Those shared priorities include ensuring that federal laws are embedded with respect for Indigenous people, promoting mutual respect through human rights education, and providing oversight and accountability for implementing the declaration.
Meanwhile, most of the First Nations’ priorities include changing or repealing the Indian Act which currently does not align with UNDRIP.
That includes addressing discrimination in band registration and membership provisions in the act, supporting the co-development of opt-in alternatives to the act and more.
The plan would also work to advance the Inuit-Crown partnership and healthcare and recognize and support Metis rights to self determination.
All actions to implement the declaration will be done in cooperation with the Indigenous peoples they impact.
