The first annual report since the establishment of BC’s Declaration Act Action Plan last year has been released.
Spanning April 1, 2022, to March 31, 2023, the report details the province’s implementation of the UNs Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
Through the plan, actions are categorized by goals like self-determination, title and rights, ending Indigenous-specific racism, and social, cultural and economic well-being.
While 32 actions have been worked on over the past year, only 4 have been completed.
They have been achieved by funding Indigenous tourism businesses and promoting culturally relevant sports and physical activity under their cultural goals.
Under title and rights, a secretariat was established to guide the government to meet its obligations, and guidelines for civil litigation regarding Indigenous rights were issued, laying the groundwork for accountability.
Substantial completion has been made on several other actions, though much more work still needs to be done.
