Ahead of a long weekend, the Northwest Fire Centre is reminding residents about properly extinguishing fires.
Since April 1, wildfires have burned more than 960,000 hectares, 52% of which were human caused.
While only the Nadina Fire zone is under a category 1 campfire prohibition, the recent warm and dry conditions should prompt caution.
Regulations to keep in mind when holding a fire include keeping at least 8 litres of water on hand, and not leaving a fire unattended for any amount of time.
It’s also advised that if you don’t have access to a proper fire pit, at least make a ring of rocks at least 3 metres from any flammable materials.
After extinguishing a fire, the ashes must be cold to the touch before you leave the area, which you can do by stirring water into the embers.
Leaving a campfire unattended could result in a fine up to $1,150, if it starts a wildfire, you could have to pay $100,000 or even face jail time.
Currently, province-wide category 2 and 3 bans on fires bigger than 0.5 metres by 0.5 metres remain in place.
