Construction has begun on a new development which will address the serious shortage of affordable housing in Hazelton.
Located at 2720 Highway 62, the three-story building will prioritize elders, people living with disabilities, and Indigenous residents.
Once completed, the facility will bring 31 new rental units for the community, as well as the surrounding Gitxsan and Wet’suwet’en First Nations.
Of those, 21 units will be rented out at below market rates, while the remaining 10 will be set at affordable market levels.
Available units will include a mix of one, two, and three-bedroom homes, with six accessible and seven adaptable units.
It will be operated by the Wrinch Memorial Hospital Foundation, through an annual operating investment of $575,000 from BC Housing.
BC Housing also provided $7 million toward the project’s construction.
