A rezoning proposal which would allow for new supportive housing to be built in Smithers has received first and second readings from council.
Proposed by BC Housing, the request comes following their conditional purchase of the site of the former Capri Motor Inn.
But, that purchase is contingent on them being able to build supportive housing at the site, which would require a bylaw amendment.
If passed, the amendment would shift the site from tourist commercial to comprehensive development zoning, and adjust the community plan accordingly.
From there, BC Housing would need to submit a development permit, though they aren’t planning to alter the exterior at all.
Once completed, the facility would bring up to 60 housing units for those at risk of or experiencing homelessness, with 24/7 support services.
